Digital Senior Consultant

Peter works with our clients to solve technical challenges at a variety of levels, building his background in software engineering and solution design into experience and knowledge of technology landscapes and system integrations across the Financial Services sectors we support.

What was your background before joining Altus Consulting?

Starting as a coder and software engineer, I found myself leading software delivery teams in support of clients across a number of regulated industries. The balance of my time had progressively shifted away from cutting code and towards design, delivery frameworks and solution architectures, but at the core of it was the same goal – to solve challenges our clients faced using technology in interesting ways.

What attracted you to Altus Consulting?

The Consultant role with Altus offered me a way to continue to engage with a breadth of different clients in support of their challenges, whilst exposing me to new sectors, patterns and technologies. The main attraction was the team: the skills, knowledge and experience were all attributes I value, and I wanted to be a part of it.

Tell us a bit about your team

I’m proud to be a part of a team with a vast breadth of skills and knowledge. No matter the topic – technology, business or process, I can find colleagues who not only have experience with the area but who are enthusiastic about sharing that experience and keen to support me. I’ve always found my colleagues to be generous in their approach as well; it’s supportive in my own development, never withheld to retain a knowledge advantage. It’s often said (by whom is a subject of debate) “if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room”: I’m definitely in the right room at Altus, and it’s good to be here.

What do you do in your role?

Part of what attracted me to Altus Consulting was the variety. I work with a number of clients across a range of engagement types. A couple of examples across the range for me could be Solution Architecture engagements and Technology Strategy reviews. A Solution Architecture piece of work would consist of solution design and governance working for a change programme, where I work to understand a particular technical change being introduced and ensure it is put together with consideration for how that fits into the wider system landscape and business goals. A review of an organisation’s Technology Strategy would be a focused piece of work with a technology executive, understanding the technology principles and direction in the context of the business goals, validating these principles and identifying core areas of direction for the business. This often leads to investment in change, an area where I can support the client in prioritisation, selection of partners and validation of technology partner deliveries.

What do you enjoy about working here?

Aside from the variety of work, I enjoy leading my day-to-day delivery. I’m able to work in a way which best suits my approach, working towards outcomes for the client rather than defined outputs for an artificial deadline. That is made possible with the support from my colleagues, from previous engagements where we have developed approaches to solving problems which I’m able to adapt to each particular new situation, and through tailored professional development under the line management structure we have.

How has your role changed since being here?

In my development in the role, I’ve progressed through to a Senior Consultant position which sees me lead more on engagements with clients – either on my own or running an Altus Consulting team.

What has made you stay?

There is so much scope within Altus Consulting to make a role your own. Being able to do this for myself – and seeing others mould their role to fit – means I’m able to find the right balance of a comfortable base to provide the ability to stretch myself in the role.
