Can a DFM be seen to add value or obstruct the sale of an advice business?

What does a consolidator value more, opportunities for asset management, or enhanced income streams and de-risked business?  In a market where many of the owners are approaching retirement and seeking a sale, how can a DFM prove they are a boon to the business, and not a burden?
